Our History

How we got to where we are today

When the science of acoustics was in its infancy, Martin Hirschorn, a German engineer and pioneer in sound reduction, had a dream of reducing the noise associated with modern life. After being educated in the UK, he travelled to the United States after World War 2 and founded Industrial Acoustics Company (IAC) in 1949. The one-man operation which began in New York City had the same purpose then as it does today – to make speech more intelligible, music more enjoyable, reduce the impact of industrial noise and protect people’s sense of hearing.  In short, making the world a quieter place.

History-Thumbs

For nearly 50 years, Hirschorn created solutions that are still used today, making the noise from everyday technology including gas turbines, air handing systems and industrial machinery more bearable for workers and reducing the impact on neighbouring communities. His passion for quieter, healthier and more enjoyable environments still flows through the modern IAC he founded all those years ago. It’s what we’re about, it’s what we live and breathe.

IAC today has evolved into one of the world’s largest provider of noise control products and systems, supplying the best possible solutions to unwanted noise and tuning the acoustics of specialist testing environments. Becoming a global leader in our field didn’t just happen overnight; when Hischorn sold the group after his retirement in 1998, the key focus for the future was international growth. It’s not just people in developed countries that get annoyed with nuisance noise, its a global issue.

Our international growth plans started in 2000 when we acquired  HM Akustik (Now known as IAC Nordic) in Denmark. This site has developed since being owned by IAC and is now one of the largest suppliers of anti-vibration mounts to the European region and beyond. Vibration is a prime source of low frequency noise and by isolating machinery and buildings can significantly reduce structure-borne noise.

Further expansion increased our global footprint with manufacturing and licensee agreements set up in the Middle East and Eastern Europe all helping to secure contracts in these regions. Acquisitions continued in 2008 when Colpro based in Sydney, Australia joined IAC (now known as IAC Acoustics Australia). Specialising in the industrial noise control sector whilst also carrying out specialist projects in the diesel power generation market, the acquisition of Colpro also increased our manufacturing footprint in the APAC region.

In 2009, IAC entered the Chinese market. Initially through via joint venture with a manufacturing partner, our production site and sales office in Dongguan has been a key driver in securing business in China and also providing cost effective products to rest of the group. Further growth in the APAC region continued in 2010 when our Australian division acquired two organisations in the NSW area, Acoustics Systems and Sound Attenuators Australia. Both these companies specialised in the HVAC sector, complementing IAC’s history, being one of the first companies to produce attenuators for air handling systems. Our product experience, matched with their local knowledge has been very successful with large scale installations now across the whole of Australia.

In January 2016 China based Beijing Greentec Acoustics Engineering Company acquired the Australian, China and European group companies.  Beijing Greentec Acoustics Engineering Co, part of the Greentec Group of Companies, is a publicly quoted firm in China with 280 employees, a 30,000m2 factory and an Acoustical R&D facility located in Beijing.  The era of strategic growth continues under the new ownership – IAC Acoustics UK acquired Hodgson Acoustics in 2018. Hodgson Acoustics compliments the existing IAC UK business by providing solutions to the Industrial and Power Generation sectors, in particular specialising in providing packaged acoustic enclosures to Original Equipment Manufacturers from its 50,000m2 facilities.

Our Strategic Plan for growth through to 2025 ensures we will remain at the forefront of the noise control sector – supporting our aspirations for growth, while delivering on our customers expectations and meeting the changing needs of acoustics in the built environment.
